It paid off when finally I was put in touch with the Lutheran Thuso Rehabilitation Center. Occupational therapists assist people with disabilities at this non-profit mission organization and was told that if I brought Meisorela in, they could assess him and determine what he would need.

It was quite a ways away and off the beaten path, so after sloshing through some deep mud puddles, getting lost, getting better directions, we finally arrived. When I got there, some women told me I couldn't be helped because I didn't have an appointment, but I boldly repeated what I had been told on the phone 2 days earlier and insisted that I would not leave without a wheelchair. I was determined! (I saw a few wheelchairs lined up against the wall in a corridor and had used one of them to bring Meisorela inside)

A technician kindly told me that they had nothing and no funds at the moment because they relied on donations only. He showed that me some of the materials he could use to make him a custom made crawling device, but was out of the plastic and the liner. I insisted that a wheelchair with sturdy wheels would be best. His leg needs to be out of the dirt. (I had even considered welding him one myself, or getting Kieth to.)

Eventually, a caring and kind gentlemen came to tell me that Meisorela could borrow one of Thuso Centre's wheelchairs for a month.
Hallelujah! He also gave me a number for a medical supplier in Gaborone as well.

Things were looking up.

Next, I attempted to get the wheelchair into the trunk of the Corolla and it wouldn't fit. Then, I tried the front seat. It would be a tight squeeze and I had a wheel at my throat but I was determined. After all that, I couldn't, get the car to start.

I called Keith who was working at the office, and he came. While we waited for him, I sat down, exhausted, with a book that was in my purse "Oxygen--Deep Breathing for the Soul" and started to read it to Petunia (his 10 yr old niece who's been coming with me to the hospitals and clinics to help lift Miesorela in and out of the truck, and to translate). The scripture that it happened to flip open to was from Luke, and we read the story of the friends who went to all that trouble to get their paralyzed friend lowered through the roof to see Jesus. The Lord spoke to my heart...and I received a promise to see Jesus work a miracle as a result of my obedience and effort. (I think Petunia heard from God in that moment too. Of all the 206 pages in the book, this was the story we randomly opened to.

Keith arrived and we switched vehicles and he managed to get the corolla running again. (He knows it's quirks)

When we drove into Miesorela's yard and started unloading the wheelchair there were smiles, squeals of delight, and much celebration. No one in the family expected it was possible, and it was beyond their means to even dream of such a thing!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_zeYFXxAef4E/S-TFsugmygI/AAAAAAAAATA/TZ_iaxHSFzM/s400/2010wheelchiar+022.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5468713219724331522" /> Rejoicing in the yard when we got home. (My house is the white one you see in the background)span style="font-weight:bold;">All things are possible for those who believe! When they thanked me I said "Thank Jesus. He made this happen." Then I attempted a traditional Batswana happy dance with MmaBepi and the girls. Today was truly a day to celebrate!

MmaBepi noticed my muddy truck, and with tears in her eyes, she offered to wash it for me. She was so grateful. Several others from our neighbourhood, of all ages worked together on it. I could hear singing, and rejoicing, and laughter, as they worked.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_zeYFXxAef4E/S-TFuNEFV6I/AAAAAAAAATQ/173OG5E9T1s/s400/2010wheelchiar+038.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5468713245106067362" /> The neighbours washing my truck to say thank you.

And I looked over and saw Meisorela grinning from ear to ear.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_zeYFXxAef4E/S-TFtGiG_bI/AAAAAAAAATI/wGM7lfe_q6Q/s400/2010wheelchiar+028.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5468713226173087154" /> Meisorela sitting in front of his house with his new (borrowed) wheelchair and happily chatting to his nieces.

"Pure religion before God the Father is this, to care for widows and orphans in their distress. I had prayed for MmaBepi last December, and when Jesus miraculously healed her, I have been called to pray for all of the injuries and infirmaties that cause distress to the family.

One morning(April 16th), MmaBepi and 9 year old Petunia came over and told me that Miesorela (MmaBepi's blind and extremely crippled nephew) had sores on his leg. When I got over to pray for him it was worse than anything I have ever seen. Looking at his leg, the wound was so deeply infected and looked so pussy and sore it almost made me cry. He sits in the sand all day and I think sometimes has to drag himself through his own excrement. I did pray and annoint his leg with oil for healing, but let's just say I was feeling empty and didn't have the faith for a miracle. I knew he needed medical care.

My immediate response was to gather Jacob and Abigail into the front seat of the truck and I hefted Meisorela (with 9 year old Petunias help, Keith was away flying) into the back seat. We drove to the private Hospital because it was a Saturday morning and it has seemed that doctors are only there every few days and not on weekends. The first question I was asked when we arrived was "Who will pay for the treatment?" Of course I would. It was not anything I wouldn't do for any of my own children and this man is God's dearly loved child.

They scraped out his wound (a sloughectomy) I think they called it, and gave me the antibiotic prescription and pain meds to have filled. I had no idea what the whole thing would cost, but Keith had just taken out money from the bank, so I was trusting that what I had in my wallet would be enough. Thankfully, the bill was less than I thought, (under $200 Cdn) and I was given instructions to bring him back every 2 days to have the bandage changed and the wound cleaned.

Every few days we repeated the process of lifting him into the truck, (he weighs about 40kgs, I think) but now it was to the government hospital which is closer, and covers his dressing change. Once there, I have to track down a wheelchair (which could be left anywhere) so we can get him inside. I started asking questions. "Has anyone ever given you your own wheelchair? Would that be helpful for you?" His emphatic yes was news enough that I had another job to do; track one down for him.

The next week I couldn't take him till evening and was scolded by the nurse and sent away because she had told me the last time that dressing changes are only done in the mornings. I tried to explain again, that I just was not able to take him in the morning. Disappointed, we returned him home without being helped, and I was getting very weary.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 333px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_zeYFXxAef4E/S-SyONNhAZI/AAAAAAAAASw/Ki7SpjI_dhs/s400/Meisorela+1116.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5468691804668887442" />The next morning, Keith was flying again (it has been a very, very, busy month flying) so I had to bring Jacob and Abigail to the hospital too. The line up was painfully long and Jacob was experiencing extreme culture stress seeing all of the sick and wounded (and probably just looking for an excuse to get out of doing schoolwork too). By the time we got home I wanted to scream! I decided then, that I would just buy the dressings and change them myself at Meisorela's place and it would not be so disruptive for my Jacob and Abigail. (I had watched the nurses a few times and was confident that I could do it.) When Keith got home the next day, we discussed and felt the dressings and the wheelchair could definately be a worthy Johnathan's Seeds project.

Another 2 weeks have gone by, Meisorela is continuing to heal (a slow process)and I am still working on getting him a wheelchair (also a slow process). The healing is impeded because the bandages are always full of sand from Meisorela pulling himself crawling.

I actually took him back to the hospital when I saw the wound looking worse again. I had run out of the dressings I had purchased, and I secretly hoped the doctor would admit him so that his leg would have a chance to heal, and that he would be given a bath. But that didn't happen.

My friendship with the family has reached a new level and it had occurred to me that I would let Meisorela help us learn Setswana. We will read to him from the Setswana Bible and have a notepad and paper handy so we can write down and remember other things He, MmaBepi, and little Azalia say. And with little Petunia to translate sometimes, I really believe I will learn some of this language that has seemed so impossible to grasp up to this point. And, Meisorela's value and worth is increased in the process. I can just sense how much he wants to give to us because he is so thankful. I really think he will be a patient and gracious tutor!
Isn't God neat?!

Now that's Refreshing

<img style="float:left; This past weekend, we had the opportunity to go camping with a group of kids that regularly attends "bible club" at their private (non-Christian) school in Maun. Jacob, Abigail, and two of their home-schooled friends were also invited to join in the bible camp weekend. Cheryl and I helped where needed, and also led some of the praise and worship times. It was a real blessing to be with this group of kids and encourage them in their faith. There was plenty of fun and laughter too. And yes, we did come back tired, but definitely refreshed.

A real live safari experience

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_zeYFXxAef4E/S6mfS4pYc_I/AAAAAAAAAQg/KVRiIMlRX5Y/s200/2010+February+MarchJacks+Camp+165.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5452063970701112306" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_zeYFXxAef4E/S6mfSg1hQpI/AAAAAAAAAQY/u8w-NRysGc8/s200/2010+February+MarchJacks+Camp+065.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5452063964309570194" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_zeYFXxAef4E/S6mfSFJts2I/AAAAAAAAAQQ/zS6fk_TIhC8/s200/2010+February+MarchJacks+Camp+036.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5452063956878078818" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_zeYFXxAef4E/S6mfRvuyu8I/AAAAAAAAAQI/WjLFT05N-0E/s200/2010+February+MarchJacks+Camp+010.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5452063951128017858" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_zeYFXxAef4E/S6mfRdB_-qI/AAAAAAAAAQA/9cRUGp767lA/s200/2010+February+MarchJacks+Camp+097.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5452063946108304034" />
In the middle of March, Cheryl and I had the opportunity to stay for three nights at the tourist camp that I regularly fly to. It is called Jack's Camp, and is located on the edge of the Makgadikgadi Pans, a series of salt pans which offer surface water to migrating animals at this time of year. The highlights of the trip include watching the migration of 100's of zebra and wildebeest as well as sighting a herd of antelope called the oryx for the first time in Botswana. We were catered to very nicely, but left the camp exhausted as they kept us going from morning to night. As local residents, we would have preferred more down time, but I'm sure that paying guests prefer to get their fill of wildlife. (We stayed for free - a once in a lifetime - or at least once in several years perk we get for flying for the camp). I flew several guests to the camp, along with Cheryl, and we then safaried with them and flew them out to Zambia, before heading back home to Maun. We feel blessed to have had this experience.

Giraffe by the runway

There is just something so exhilerating about looking out the window and seeing a giraffe by the side of the runway as you land the airplane. It's not something that happens all of the time, but when I am flying into the Delta, I often see some type of wildlife. When we moved into this house in August, the landlord agreed to provide water by means of a "jojo" tank. He was responsible to haul water and keep the tank from running dry. Well, we had a couple of close calls, but somehow there was always just enough to keep us going. The promise of "city water" was fulfilled in early January, several months later than promised, but very welcome, none the less - that is until the water supply became very erratic. In the last month, we have had water on during the day about 1/2 of the time, but its been about ten days since that happened. Now, usually, the water will go out in the morning and come back in the evening, but on Sunday the water went out altogether and did not come back on at all (thanks to an electrical storm, power outage, and water supply issue). So, we have been going out to the jojo tank and filling 5 liter jugs to provide for our bathing, washing and flushing needs. The jojo, however, is almost empty, and since the plumber cut the pipe from the jojo and promised to come back and reconnect it a month ago, it had not been refilled whenever the water was on. After bathing in 3-5 liters of water for each of the last 3 days, you can imagine my delight to hear the water runing this morning - even though it was 5:30 am. I did what any sensible person would do, I jumped up, had a shower, ran a tub for Cheryl, and stored water for flushing. The good news is that the plumber is actually coming back today to reconnect the jojo tank, and we will be able to use that as back-up water supply after this. Oh yeah, did I forget to mention that the internet was down for two days, and the power was also out for about 12 hrs? The things we take for granted - well not as much any more!) - Keith

Pretty To Look At, Tasty To Eat

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_zeYFXxAef4E/S2QkqmLiBVI/AAAAAAAAAPI/12W5XjRqQq8/s400/2010+jan+04+290.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5432507364737680722" />

This fella is a Mopane worm and we are finding lots of them in the yard these days. She invited us to come and distribute anything we felt would bless our neighbors and those we minister to in the Hospital. You can imagine Cheryl's sqeal of delight at the sight of these knitted teddies! We immediately took a closer look to see if they were the ones Mom Hauser had knit and sent to Africa through a ministry called ICROSS. Alas they were not her handiwork but I have a feeling that when we give all of these away, Mom's busy knitting fingers will have more to send. The neat thing about giving them away is the way young and old smile with delight when I pull one out of my bag.
Hanging out to dry. Last year at Christmas they distributed care hampers they had put together mainly out of items that they found stored in the Flying Mission storage container. This year, we all prayed about doing something similar and felt a leading to go into the hospital. On Christmas Day, Keith, Julie, Colin, and Cheryl, gathered up a load of presents along with our base secretary who could translate for us, and went to the childrens ward at the Maun Hospital.
The lovely nurses took us around to each patient, and Julie and I prayed for each Mother and child. The Glorious thing about all of it is that God seemed to be healing a number of the babies right before our eyes. We watched listless babies perk up, and sit up, we watched a crying, distraught baby settle and go to sleep, and we felt God pour out Love and Healing to everyone we touched. To see God change the atmosphere and to see the smiles on their faces made this by far the best Christmas ever.<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 392px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_zeYFXxAef4E/SzlJHbNbNhI/AAAAAAAAANY/rXZrlcsPe-E/s400/IMG_1218.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5420444018429081106" />
Cheryl was appointed Hospiital Ministry coordinator at church and will be taking people with her into the hospital to pray for the sick as often as she can. There is such an openness to receive from God there.

December 24th with the Kowalskis

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 140px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_zeYFXxAef4E/Szk-Sd008rI/AAAAAAAAAM4/EguUMVD6j_U/s200/IMG_1181.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5420432113481872050" />
><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_zeYFXxAef4E/Szk-SCh3YTI/AAAAAAAAAMw/mgvq67k03aE/s200/IMG_1177.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5420432106154582322" />
Last year Christmas Eve was really hard. Keith was flying and I was alone with the kids greiveing hard for Johnathan and feeling very alone. That experience built some compassion into us and we determined to invite whoever the Lord would tell us to, so that they would not be alone at Christmas. Keith felt led to go the the Airport and visit some of the guys he has been getting to know. It was then that the Lord prompted him to invite Lawrence. Lawrence came with his lovely family and we had a truly beautiful time together. It was a little unnerving at first when he told me that these strangers were coming to dinner, but the Lord connected our hearts and it felt really good to be able to encourage and pray for them, and the kids had a great time playing together too. Now, they are not strangers, but friends.
Laurence's wife, Flora, came to our church the next day as well!<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_zeYFXxAef4E/Szk-Ssw7b-I/AAAAAAAAANA/tNZZSKGUtCE/s200/IMG_1175.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5420432117492051938" /></a

Professor Praise Stikes Again

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_zeYFXxAef4E/SzWzCCTRNkI/AAAAAAAAAMo/Zb7eAplat6s/s200/DSC03509.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5419434574169060930" />
Even Keith's parents got involved helping out at a Christian Children's worship and fun night that Cheryl and some of her friends had planned.
Mom worked at the popcorn booth all evening scooping and scooping and scooping and scooping popcorn to fill 70+ bags. Dad was working at the BBQ preparing the smokies with some of the other men. Keith was just everywhere helping out with everything. Professor Praise made another appearance teaching the kids about being Christ's light in a world that is filled with darkness. God even backed up the message by causing the power to go out at just the right time accentuating the point. Professor Praise made a head lamp out of a bulb, wire, batteries, and gotch elastic. That's right gotch elastic... it was pretty silly but we all had fun and the hopefully the kids will never forget the message.

Fantastic Game Viewing

We spent the day Saturday bumping along 100 km of park roads to see some fantastic sights. We bumped and grinded over trecherous terrain for the next 7 hours to cover 100 km of park roads. Cheryl joked that the drive was kinda like being in labor - her body hurt and she didn't know how long it would take. However, we had fantastic game viewing - the best of our lives. Here are some pictures of what we were able to see(you can view more photos on facebook).

A Camera for Terrance

My (Keith's) parents are visiting from Canada rignt now and are staying for the month of November. You may remember that Johnathan passed away on Nov 5 last year after falling into our swimming pool. My parents came to stay with us now, to be of support as we approach the one year mark (tomorrow), and we are grateful to have them here.

As we look back over this year, we are grateful for the many relationships that God has blessed us with. One in particular, is our dear Zimbabwean friend Terrance. Terrance brought joy into our lives despite the tragedy that we had gone through. We were blessed to be able to sow some of "Johnathan's Seeds" into Terrance's life with the purchase of a passport in January, for his brand new bride.

We have kept in touch with Terrance even after moving to Maun (800km away) in May of this year. Recently, we were in Gaborone for medical appointments, and we were able to spend some time with Terrance and Patience. It was great to see them again.

In one of our phone conversations wiith Terrance, we mentioned that my parents would be coming to visit. Terrance asked if my parents would look for a camera for him...perhaps at an auction or garage sale. Terrance previously had a camera, and was able to earn money taking pictures of people and selling them the photos (pictures are very special in Botswana as few people even have pictures of their loved ones, and even fewer people have cameras). Well, God had an even better plan for Terrance. My parents were able to get an excellent camera for Terrance from the lost and found at their church. It seems that the camera had been there for over a year, and the parish workers were glad to allow them to bring the camera for Terrance. In fact, one of the workers even donated a couple of rolls of film to go with it. So after taking it to the camera repair shop for a tune-up, my parents were able to bring this blessing for Terrance. He was estatic to say the least! God does work in wonderful ways, and even more good has come from Johnathan's passing!

I've included an older picture of Terrance and Patience as well as one of Johnathan since I've mentioned him alot in this posting.

The Scorpion

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 303px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_zeYFXxAef4E/StuC95PmM-I/AAAAAAAAALA/759cj3fQ_C8/s400/2009+SeptemberOctober+074.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5394048978556171234" />
We found this guy in our Living Room one night. In the beginning of September, FMS got a charter to do scenic flights for 45 students (ages 6 to 12) from a Catholic school in the small village of Tonota, run by missionary nuns. It was a big field trip, and a once in a lifetime experience for these kids. Last March, the daughter of one of the FM pilots was volunteer teaching at the school and had her dad come in and talk about Mission Flying. The kids got so excited about flying, that they worked extra hard for the next 6 months to raise the funds to see the Okavango Delta from the air. Keith got the job flying the entire group in the C207. It took ten - 15 minute flights to take all of them plus chaperones on a scenic flight and stay within their budget. The boisterous and very excited group filled the entire waiting room of the Maun airport. The teachers and students were all very happy with the experience as you can tell by the smiling faces pictured above. It was very fulfilling to be part of what was an unforgettable day for these kids.

Children's Ministry in Maun

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_zeYFXxAef4E/SqZsi1ZeqYI/AAAAAAAAAKQ/lEAzPgGrdzM/s400/Professor+Praise.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5379106150645934466" />
I have always loved dressing up and acting silly. When some moms got together to plan a Vacation Bible School for the kids here, the idea popped into my head that we needed a humorous character to get the kids laughing and enjoying God's Word. One thing led to another and now I am known affectionately as "Crazy Professer Praise" I have really been enjoying helping out at VBS, designing the logo for the t-shirts, leading the kids in Praise and Worship, and doing kooky science experiments that teach Bible Lessons. It seems almost surreal. We have done pretty well in our small Flying Mission suite (pictured above) but are more than ready to settle in to our own "home" again. It has seemed that life has been on hold for the last 6 weeks, but God is faithful and His timing is perfect. The place we will be moving to is everything we prayed for. The neighbourhood is very much village Africa, and we are believing that God wants us there for His Glory and for His Holy Purpose. So with smiles and praise songs on our lips, we pick up the packing tape, and haul the boxes, for what hopefully will be a place to settle for awhile.

Northern Medical Flights

When we first came to Botswana, the flying we did was medical evacuations / patient transfers for the Ministry of Health. We had a twin engine King Air, complete with two fully trained paramedics and all of the life saving equipment they would need. The Medics handled the patient and all of their care. Everything seemed quite calm and professional.

Today I had my first northern medical flight, with our little single engine Cessna 207. There were no paramedics,and only a stretcher in the airplane, although a nurse from the clinic accompanied the patient. We went to Seronga today, the one village that we regularly do medical flights for, from our Maun base. The patient had a broken leg, and it would seem that rudimentary care was administered in the form of basic first aid (strips of cloth tied around rough wooden splints). It made me realize that what we do here in Maun is very important to the people of Seronga. We transported the patient to Gumare, a village with a larger clinic, where she could be assessed, and receive treatment. Without the medical flight, the journey to a larger clinic would have taken much longer. The 20 minute plane ride takes the place of several hours of travel by boat and truck. (Sometimes the patient will later be transported by our King Air to the Francistown hospital, if the Gumare clinic determines that this is required).

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_zeYFXxAef4E/SmdgTo1upLI/AAAAAAAAAJo/gDez8sGTu0I/s400/Seronga+patient.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5361359771904418994" /><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_zeYFXxAef4E/SmdgTv_k7wI/AAAAAAAAAJw/Twts2ielTG4/s400/Keith+2+fmc.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5361359773824773890" />

High Water Brings Hippos

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 261px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_zeYFXxAef4E/Smdwv0GZmiI/AAAAAAAAAKA/wp_plIbxSAg/s400/Hippo2.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5361377848149514786" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 327px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_zeYFXxAef4E/SmdwNMqB_3I/AAAAAAAAAJ4/8raHDEhX3kw/s400/Hippo1.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5361377253445992306" />

Close to our flooded yard, (not even a five minute walk) We spotted this guy wading and yawning in the water. It seems that water had not been seen here for 15...30...50 years (depending who you talk to). Well, within two hours time, the water filled our dry river bed to a depth of 1 1/2 meters. (the pictures show how we watched the water fill our yard). Now the river is not wide, or wasn't, but there was enough water to spill over the retaining wall and gradually creep across the yard. Although the water is an inch or two deep, it is turning the yard into quicksand. A front end loader drove in this afternoon and got stuck for over an hour...after which he retreated to drier ground. It's not as dramatic as it sounds, but the water and sand make a bad combination. We managed to remove most of our belongings with the help of some dear friends and coworkers, and are storing them for now. We will be watching to see what happens with the water...the house may not flood at all, but we may not have access to it for some time, hence the decision to move things while we had dry ground to stand on. We are grateful that we have a place to stay for now (a small flat that Flying Mission had available), and that we can rest tonight without concern for how quickly the water is rising.

Johnathan's BEADS

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 243px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_zeYFXxAef4E/SlOoaaGLdUI/AAAAAAAAAIg/N1Xx74HSQwU/s400/005.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5355809553508955458" />
God put it on my heart one morning in prayer, a few weeks ago to train some young women to make beaded necklaces that they can sell. I was praying for God to lead me to the ones He had in mind for the project. It wasn’t long before a couple of young gals came to the gate asking for work. When I shared my idea with them, their eyes lit up, and they have come back everyday since, bringing friends with them. Some extra bibles were left behind by the missions group that we teamed up with. I asked the girls if they would like to have a bible and one said she has always wanted one! They are soooo excited and eager to learn and the numbers of girls they are bringing with them is growing. In sharing with them around the table as we bead together, I am hearing their dreams and being able to share, mentor, and encourage, them as we work. They truly want to walk like Jesus and grow. I’ve decided to combine Bible Study with Beading on Saturday afternoons. Please pray for Kamogelo, Pretty, Baitshepi, Agnes, Leseho, Memory, Bianca, and Anarrah, and any others that they bring along. These sweet young women have so much potential.

Sharing with the School Kids in Maun

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 299px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_zeYFXxAef4E/Sj1HLzDZyEI/AAAAAAAAAII/UwwgotqfoPc/s400/2009-June+063.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5349510200394631234" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_zeYFXxAef4E/Sj1ESbDsV1I/AAAAAAAAAIA/h3YLzOIPbh0/s200/2009-June+063.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5349507015677597522" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_zeYFXxAef4E/Sj1D4oLj5gI/AAAAAAAAAH4/Q9LprVbkrBI/s200/2009-June+066.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5349506572523660802" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_zeYFXxAef4E/Sj1DDF3jDmI/AAAAAAAAAHw/jDem_3yH2I8/s200/2009-June+077.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5349505652779847266" />
A Ministry team came up to Maun from South Africa this week. We have really enjoyed the time spent with these folks. The children were invited to take part in the outreach to Matswani Private School. They learned parts and rehearsed all morning for a play that was presented in the afternoon. They also helped lead a song with actions. After some fun and games for all and a well presented Bible Message, they asked the children (about 40 attended) if anyone struggled with fear. Over half raised their hands and we had an opportunity to pray with and encourage them.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 201px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_zeYFXxAef4E/Sj1H-etwV9I/AAAAAAAAAIQ/qH4CeNwAdeU/s400/2009-June+048.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5349511071108454354" />
Once again this was an amazing experience to see the Love of God bring hope and healing to precious hearts. :)

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_zeYFXxAef4E/Sj1JHRrMP9I/AAAAAAAAAIY/bmqOmm3bg44/s200/2009-June+062.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5349512321738489810" />
A few Mom's and I have gotten together and are planning Bible Day camps during the school break. We got to know Filda, a sweet, older Zimbabwean woman, who sold beautiful tableclothes, bedspreads, and woven baskets. She carried the load of merchandise in a large sack on her head...quite a site as she is a small woman! She is the sole provider for her 10 small grandchildren, (her own children have died leaving them to her) and works very hard, walking long distances despite failing eyesight and much physical pain to put food on the table.

She was so sad to hear that we were moving, (Keith's parents also bought from her while they visited) as she could count on our home for a place to rest her feet, have a bite to eat, and sell some things.

She told me that she would come to Maun to visit us. It really isn't much farther than Gaborone from Zimbabwe and I am so thankful for this relationship. We spoke about God's Goodness and she shared through tears that He is the one that gives her the strength to get through such difficult times. I had to agree with her.

Maun - Also Known as The World's Largest Sandbox

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_zeYFXxAef4E/Sio-BjKmf8I/AAAAAAAAAHA/qfohRizGy1U/s200/2009+may+30+Sunday+afternoon+walk+by+the+river+001.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5344152104169013186" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_zeYFXxAef4E/Sio-BflEUqI/AAAAAAAAAG4/e3fktvXAttM/s200/2009-May+056.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5344152103206277794" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_zeYFXxAef4E/Sio-BI4DJJI/AAAAAAAAAGw/NaYWm9TzRTs/s200/2009-May+063.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5344152097111876754" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_zeYFXxAef4E/Sio-A5X7xXI/AAAAAAAAAGo/h0B2wxdT_kg/s200/2009+5+june+001.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5344152092950644082" />

We've been here 2 weeks now, and are loving our new surroundings. Sometimes it feels more like we are camping at the lake than living in a town. Jacob got the idea to collect twigs and build a campfire in our backyard for roasting weiners and marshmallows, and we are only a 2 minute walk from the river. Sand, Sand, Sand is everywhere...this place is one big sandbox! The kids have been digging around in it...using our shovels!

Keith has been flying almost every day which is great! Last week he saw a Giraffe at the end of the runway.

GIVING THANKS for MOTHERS and OTHERS

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_zeYFXxAef4E/SgoYQPZY7OI/AAAAAAAAAGg/VsLnQPwq7gU/s200/2009+trip+to+saskatoon+April+047.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5335103375863770338" />
(posted by Cheryl)
Mom Hauser and Mom Kowalski are amazing Mothers

Ever since Mother's Day, I have been pondering what it is that makes a "great mother"
As I was doing this I was reminded of Jesus words in Matthew 12:48

"Who is my mother and my brothers?" Pointing to his disciples, he said, "Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother."

When I think of all of the women in my life who have ever nurtured and brought me guidance, direction, counsel, and prayer, I become overwhelmed with the number of "Mothers" I have had. Some of these women never even had children of their own. My first piano teacher, The Mothers of my childhood friends, Mentors while I was in College, The nuns I stayed with as a young adult, My older sister, The older women at Harvest Christian Fellowship, The older women at Hope, My care group leaders, and finally, The beautiful women I have come to know in Gaborone have all had a role in Mothering me in one way or another.

I guess I would like to send a tribute to all Women everywhere who are sowing into the lives of younger gals like me. We have managed to have lots of visits with family, a few sleepovers with the cousins, and even some meals with friends. The highlight of our arrival back in Canada was - would you believe - playing in the snow! There was just a little left in Grandpa's back yard, and the kids managed to play in the snow at least 6 times in the first two days. We soon wished that the temperatures were a little warmer, as Easter weekend was frigid for Africaners like ourselves.

We have really been blessed by the outpouring of love that so many of people have showered us with. It is a little overwhelming to have so much attention from so many people in such a short time, but we are BLESSED! We are looking forward to visiting as many people as we can while we are here. Sharing in your lives and being able to pray together has been a real treat.

We are greatful for this time to grieve and rejoice with family and friends, and yet we look forward to our return to Botswana. We will be moving to Maun in the month of May and will be starting a new phase of our life in the country. But if it dies it produces many seeds." John 12:24
Johnathan's Seeds have begun to be scattered across this beautiful land. When Johnathan died, people asked if they could make a donation in his memory. Starting Johnathan's Seeds seemed like the perfect way to honor his memory, and help the people that God had planted in our lives.

We are pleased to introduce you to the first people we have been able to help through your generous gifts.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 196px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_zeYFXxAef4E/SbA19fcRrEI/AAAAAAAAAFY/2GrcALV57qs/s200/2009+Jan+Feb+032.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5309803291198204994" />

Our first "seeds" loan was actually for seeds - maize seeds - given to an industrious Zimbabwean. Felix has planted a crop of maize,the staple food item here. Cheryl has never really been excited about gardening...until Felix came to report that the plants had reached his knees already. In April we are expecting a great harvest.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_zeYFXxAef4E/SbA19-LsuUI/AAAAAAAAAFg/W8Mjg2M0cQY/s200/2009+Feb+g-west+004.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5309803299450173762" />

Our next "seeds" loan was given to a young bible school student named Terrence who has become a dear friend of our family. He got married in December after waiting 7 years to be able to afford to pay the bride price. After he got married to Patience (a fitting name, we think) there was a problem. She needed a passport to be able to come to Botswana to be with him. It was our joy to be able to help bring her here. These guys are a beautiful couple with such promise. Patience is a school teacher and her and Terrence both have a heart for children's ministry.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_zeYFXxAef4E/SbA1-ER229I/AAAAAAAAAFo/GBeDgKwBLUw/s200/012.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5309803301086616530" />

Our most recent "planting" is in Peter's life. He has regularly come to our gate willing to do any kind of work. As we was cutting our lawn one day, he mentioned that he would like to own a push mower like ours (sometimes people reduce his pay grossly when he uses their equipment.) We happened to know a missionary who was leaving. You guessed it. They were selling a push mower just like ours for only 100 Pula ($16.00 cdn) Now Peter can work for himself and earn a fair wage. Sometimes the smallest seeds can produce big yeilds.

Teaching in Old Naledi

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_zeYFXxAef4E/SZHkwlQ5qwI/AAAAAAAAAEw/Z_VKHN9tHEk/s400/2009+Jan+Feb+105.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5301269759679638274" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_zeYFXxAef4E/SZHkwimQRMI/AAAAAAAAAEo/yek9kz3mCBI/s400/2009+Jan+Feb+074.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5301269758963893442" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_zeYFXxAef4E/SZHjGSAmHGI/AAAAAAAAAEg/tsCocDNdfTg/s400/2009+Jan+Feb+084.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5301267933444840546" />
We met a missionary who runs an afterschool project in the poorest most destitute part of Gaborone. She teaches the kids bible stories, verses, and songs, then the kids separate into two smaller groups for classes in music, dance, math, art, or English, depending on the day. Then she feeds them a hearty supper, all 300 or so in attendance. (for many its the only food they get) My heart was stirring as she told us about it and asked her what kind of help she needed. She's from Korea, doesn't speak english well, and asked me if I would teach the English classes. Its so important that they learn English well so they can work, do well at school, and it gives the children a better chance of building a better life. When she found out how much I love teaching the Bible to children, she asked if I would also teach a Bible class as well. After praying and talking to Keith about it I enthusiastically agreed. So, every Thursday afternoon that's where you'll find us. The classroom is small and sweaty-hot and JAM packed wall to wall and spilling over with kids eager to learn. And they are wonderful to teach! I have never taught a more beautiful group! They are so responsive and are very grateful and so happy to be there. I have experienced soooo much of Gods presence there, and am overcome by how much God cares for these kids. Abigial helps me sing fun bible songs, and Jacob has been asked to read to a few of the intermediate children who are just beginning to learn english while i teach the young teens. I never could have dreamed for a more perfect way for my family to serve together and its exciting to see my kids joyfully giving. It is definately the high point of our week.

Annual Bible Distribution at Princess Marina Hospital

It is a tradition here in Gaborone,Botswana that Flying Mission personnel will spend the morning of Boxing Day at the local public hospital distributing bibles to the patients who have had to spend their Christmas there. This year I was privileged to be part of this tradition.
I have to admit that the thought itself scared me...approaching total strangers and offering them a bible...what would say, how would it go? But like most things, the thought of doing something is much more terrifying than actually doing it. I was privileged to spend time with two men that received bibles. The first, Godwin was a middle aged man who had many complications from diabetes. He was very open to having a visit, and I was able to pray with him. A real peace settled upon us, and we were both grateful for our time together. The second man has a difficult multi syllable name which I can not remember, but I do know that he is about my age and had been in the hospital for about two months now. I knelt by his bed for about a half an hour, and almost the entire time, I held his hand. I prayed mostly silently for this man, and he wept from time to time.
I don't know what impact this day has had on my life, but I have been keenly aware that Christmas can be a lonely time for many, but that each of us can make a difference to someone.

The birth of a child

That's what we are supposed to be remembering this year as we run around to parties, go shopping and sing Christmas carols by the swimming pool (just rubbing it in - I heard about the -42*C last weekend). It's far too easy to forget about the real reason we have a holiday called Christmas. But I hope this year that we will take time to really reflect on what happened in Bethlehem around 2000 years ago... God came down to earth as a little baby. Why would the creator of the universe humble himself and take on the form of a defenseless baby - one that would depend on his parents for everything that he needed? Because he had a plan. It seems that God really trusted Mary and Joseph - and I guess that means he really trusts each one of us too. And if Mary and Joseph had a part to play in God's big plan for our salvation, it seems that he must have a plan for our lives that is bigger than we can understand too.
Since Johnathan died, we have been praying that God would use it for his glory, that he would indeed work good out of the situation. The fact that God sent his Son to earth to die for our sins, is the reason that we can have hope in the midst of a tragic situation like this. Johnathan has gone to Heaven to be with the Father. Yet we are still here, because God has a plan that is bigger than we can comprehend. We shed tears, and we grieve, but we also rejoice because of that.

Unless a grain of wheat...

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 152px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_zeYFXxAef4E/SRXROk4LI5I/AAAAAAAAADo/PTKvyubKwOI/s200/suitcase+photo.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5266345387627324306" />

Johnathan Reese Kowalski
Feb 16, 2007 - November 5, 2008

It is with great sadness that we must share this news. Our little Johnathan fell into our swimming pool and drowned this week. Cheryl, paramedics, and finally doctors worked to save his life, but were unable to.
We have been comforted by many here in Botswana, and by many through prayer, calls and e-mails. We are beginning to see the fruit of this accident in how our own hearts have changed, and how the lives of others are changing as well. One Botswana man told me tonight, "This happened for our sake. I am learning so much from this and my heart is changing". We are praising God for His goodness, and are GRATEFUL for the time that Johnathan was with us.

Happy Thanksgiving

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_zeYFXxAef4E/SPQZclFEqyI/AAAAAAAAADQ/glpyxU72Pak/s200/PA030092.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5256854643828632354" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_zeYFXxAef4E/SPQZc_V0v1I/AAAAAAAAADY/S_pnDC5Kn-U/s200/PA080096.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5256854650878213970" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_zeYFXxAef4E/SPQZc6Uw7fI/AAAAAAAAADg/dnNqL6It0aE/s200/P1030391.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5256854649531592178" />
It has been an unusual feeling to celebrate Thanksgiving sitting outside, beside the swimming pool of another missionary family. No there wasn't any turkey, but we did have chicken and pumpkin pie, and we were with a number of other Canadians. It was great to be able to celebrate a Canadian holiday together, as it is easy to become immersed in the day to day life of Botswana.

Jacob and Abigail have finally found a couple of friends including a boy from Zimbabwe, a boy from South Africa, and one from Germany. For this I am thankful, as I was feeling bad for them that they had not found any friends in the first 5 weeks here. I am thankful for the friends they have made.

Cheryl and I have also been making friends, and we are thankful for the people that we have been meeting. In particular, we have really connected with a seminary student from Zimbabwe named Terrance. He actually had a brother named Keith (who passed away a couple of years ago). He lives right in the neighbourhood too.

We are thankful also for the house we have to live in and the vehicle we drive. We have been given so much, and we don't have to drive very far away to realize that. We are thankful for the ones that we are able to help because our God cares for our needs so well.

Finally, we are thankful for our family and friends back home. Without your support, we would have never made it. Thanks for helping us all along the way. We continue to be blessed as we are able to e-mail and SKYPE now, and are able to remain part of your lives in spite of the distance between us.

We have a great big God who takes care of us and makes this all possible. There was a six year old boy (Jacob's age) with a head injury as a result of a car accident who also needed to be transported to Francistown. I wasn't prepared for the emotions that I would feel when I saw this young boy, and heard his cries of pain. As well, although the hospital had bandaged his head, they seemed to have ignored the torn flesh on parts of his leg. I became very emotional inside, feeling what I can imagine the Father of this child was feeling. I prayed, asking God to allow me to do my job to the best of my ability, as I was the pilot flying this leg of the trip. I was there to do a job. My part is to fly the plane, the paramedics are there to care for the patients. Together, we can save lives - sometimes. (A few days earlier, the patient died before the plane got off the ground). We had a third flight to Maun - Francistown the next morning, and the paramedics took the time to check in on the little boy. I am praising God that he was doing much better, and the scan showed no hemorrhage on the brain - perhaps a miracle itself.

The public (ground) ambulances here are basically transport only, and provide no medical care for the patients themselves. It is boggling to wrap your mind around this, as it is so foreign from what we have back home. I am struggling to understand how a patient in critical condition can simply be loaded into the back of a truck and driven to the airport with no medical equipment to sustain them, but I have since been told that the clinics themselves often don't have much medical equipment. So without the airplane, many patients would not make it to the larger hospital, and would not get the care they needed. I am grateful for the lives that can be saved because of the airplane, and the (private) paramedics we transport.

I'm an Air Ambulance Driver!

I was moved today as I reflected on God's goodness and all that He is doing on our behalf. He has arranged for us to rent a house that is safe, secure, and affordable. This is a big God thing, because there is just not much available that meets those criteria here right now. I just got my paperwork, and already I have had two flights. I sat under the wing of the airplane waiting for the paramedics to return from delivering the patient to the hospital. It was then that it hit home. These medical flights save lives. That alone is worth being here. I had a real God day just realizing how he has been working things out - bring us to Botswana, providing us with a place to live, resurrecting my aviation career, giving us some options for vehicles, and just being with us. I was so moved by His kindness, as I thought about all these things. Then on the way home, He impressed on me to bless a particular street vendor with a little boy. We won't be able to help everyone, but we can make a difference to the one to whom HE sends us.

My First King Air Flight

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_zeYFXxAef4E/SPQSu4TTYjI/AAAAAAAAACw/ktF6jS5rq_c/s400/P1030376.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5256847261644841522" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_zeYFXxAef4E/SPQSu920KWI/AAAAAAAAAC4/JNBUYZ6Xpqc/s400/P1030388.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5256847263135967586" />
This morning I went up for a test flight with one of the Captains who was checking out the airplane after some maintenance. As the non-flying pilot, I learned about the aircraft and called out the checklist for the Captain at his request. After a successful test flight, we radioed in to request permission to return to the airport. To our surprise, we were told we would have to wait. The President's plane would be arriving, and as such, the airport is closed for about 10 minutes on either side.
Since we had some time to kill, the Captain took the opportunity to turn the controls over to me so that I could get the feel of the aircraft. Flying today made me glad that I had just renewed my instrument rating back in Saskatoon. The haze over Gaborone was so thick that most of our flying was strictly on instruments. You could not see the ground for most of the flight. It was good practice on instrument flying, without all of the stress of being responsible for the entire aircraft. Then, once we got clearance, the Captain allowed me to fly the aircraft in. He even had me land the airplane, which was quite stressful, but went well.
I was supposed to do some actual training this afternoon, but then a medical flight came up, and the guys are gone for the rest of the day with the aircraft.
Speaking of training, Cheryl drove from "home" clear across the city yesterday. It is quite a bit different driving a standard (in the right hand seat),on the left side of the road, with the signals and wipers on the opposite sides that you are used to. Besides that, many of the roads are unfamiliar to us, so navigating with a map is mandatory. She did quite well, but will hopefully get some more practice before having to venture out alone.
We are waiting to hear about a house that we would like to rent - which may happen today. The cost and availability of housing is much like in Saskatoon - it is a hot rental market in Gaborone as well. We are currently living in a suberb, much like Martensville is to Saskatoon, and we are hoping to be able to stay out there as several of the Flying Mission families are living there as well.

Finally A hello from Botswana

Hello Dear Friends, its been awhile since we have had internet access that would allow us to actually post a blog.

Life in Botswana is wonderful right now. I have just written and passed my air law exam. I will be doing my flight training this week, and provided that my work visa comes through, will be on the flight schedule by the 15th of Sept.

We are living in the home of a family on furlough right now, and are waiting to hear from a landlord here who has been renting to another Flying Mission Family. If the rent doesn't go up too much, we will be renting the house of the Director of FM who is moving back to the US.

Cheryl and the kids have launched into another year of home schooling and things so far are going well. The kids have adjusted well, although we have not met many families with kids yet. That's a point of prayer for us.

Grocery stores are plentiful, and there are stores / shops that carry pretty well anthing you need. There seems to be things that you might only find at one or two stores (kids bikes for instance) but we are still very blessed here. We also were able to pick up some housewares at a church thrift shop, which runs on Monday mornings.

We are getting around Gaborone nicely in Flying Mission's car right now, and are in the process of finding a different car to purchase.

Life here does not seem that much different from Saskatoon in many ways. Although, it always gets dark before 7 and you tend to just stay home after that. All of the expats (foreigners) and many of the Botswana tend to live behind walls, with electric wire, and often a dog in the yard. The locals call this "stop nonsense".

Most of all, we are missing our friends and family back home. We have not been able to get on SKYPE yet due to the internet situation, but have had several phone calls back and forth. There are very few land lines here, and everyone has cell phones. The cost to call back to Saskatoon is 6 pula ($1) a minute, but texting here is next to free. I'm not sure if anyone in Canada has recieved the text messages I sent...haven't heard yet.

It's the end of winter here, and temperatures are much like what we had in Saskatoon when we left. I have seen 2 monkeys up by the airport, and there is a small game park right by Gaborone that we are going to check out. They apparently don't have lions, but who wants to get eaten for lunch anyway. I've been told that when you go to the big game parks, animals are in charge, so drive carefully.

I'll sign off with a few pictures. The last month or so has been a fleury of activity, and now, we're almost there.

We have been richly blessed by so many people who have joined with us in this journey. Thanks for all of the encouragement, the finances, the suitcases, and the help packing. It has been great sharing meals and laughter and tears with so many people.

Our prayer is that we would be found faithful, and it can't happen unless we are daily drawing near to the Source of our Salvation. Yet I trust that this season will pass, and I will walk closely with my Savior again.

"two are bettter than one for if one falls the other will lift him up again" thank-you for lifting us in your prayers

Blessings

Eastend, Waldheim and Govan

It's been a busy couple of weeks. Besides packing, which is / should be our # 1 priority, we have done a fair amount of travelling as well. We made a very quick trip to Eastend, attended four nights at the Waldheim Missions Conference, and camped for a couple of nights with Keith's family.
We had the opportunity to speak at Waldheim, and I'd like to talk a little about what we shared. It was about God's faithfulness. This was our third annual trip to Waldheim for the Missions Conference. The first time, we were fresh out of MAF Orientation, the 2nd, we didn't know what was going on in our overseas calling, and with the third, we were able to say we were leaving in three weeks for our first posting! We are now seeing God's faithfulness through the whole process. God's goodness overwhelmes us and what has seemed like an impossible task, has been made possible because of the many who have shared with road with us. The generosity of our friends and all who have given is cause to believe that "His Kingdom come and His will be done" is a reality.

Boxes and Suitcases

If you drop by the house these days, that's what you'll see - boxes and suitcases. As the days are quickly passing by, we are preparing to leave our home behind. We moved into our house when Jacob, now 6 1/2 was only a couple of months old. We have since brought two more Kowalski babies home and have also watched them growing up here. This place holds alot of memories for us - our growing family, the friends who have shared their lives with us, our family who has been so supportive of us. And now, the fluery of activity to pack the lives of five people (including three growing and changing children) and leaving behind what we will not be able to take - giving away, selling, sorting, storing. We ask for your prayers as these are the decisions that have to made throughout the day...we really need wisdom. And please pray that peace would surround our home and our lives as we go through this process. Most of all, it is my prayer that we would be able to take the time to spend with those who mean so much to us, while we still have time left here.

Keith

Our Flights are Booked!

It's official! We step on the plane August 21, for the start of our two year term in Botswana. The flight takes us from Saskatoon to Toronto, over to England, down to South Africa, and up to Gaborone. We arrive two days later (due to the time change) and arrive the afternoon of the 23rd in Botswana (Lord willing). In total we will be travelling for 21 hours in the air with around 16 hrs of layovers in 3 different airports. We covet your prayers as we prepare for departure and especially as we make this long journey.

Alberta Trip and Family Time

So, we want to make the most of what is left, because too soon it will be gone.

A couple weeks ago we left on a road trip for Alberta. First we went to Drumheller and visited the Royal Tyrell Museum (the kids favorite part had nothing to do with disnosaurs!). We stopped in on a couple of MAF families in Three Hills and were very encouraged. Then, off to Red Deer for a nice visit with my Aunt and Uncle. We headed down to Claresholme for a wedding social for Cheryl's niece. Next, we were off to Airdrie for a night with some friends who spent a year in Nepal. We went North to Edmonton and visited with several families. On our way home, we stopped in Derwent and Lloydminster to visit two other families. It was a great trip over 8 days covering 2100 km. Phew, I'm tired just thinking about how busy that was. We had a great trip and were richly blessed by the great connections visiting with so many friends.

The True Nature of Christ

Allow me to introduce to you my hero. She turned 95 this week, and she's my Baba. She's an amazing woman who reflects the nature of Christ. Her extravagent love is a true reflection of the heart of the Father.
I remember when I was young sitting with her in the kitchen early in the morning. It was always my special time with her, before everyone else got up. We would have a cup of tea together, she would fry me some perogies for breakfast, and we would talk. I reflect back on this time together. She was my safe place - I never felt less than, never felt inadequate. These were some of the best times of my childhood.
I am honoured that we could celebrate her 95th birthday together.
Keith

Flight test passed!

The past month of working toward my multi-instrument flight rating culminated in one beautiful spring day this week, when I flew for my flight test. I wanted to be able to say I aced it, but can only say that God's grace was with me, and I passed. I guess that I should stop wanting to rely on my own skills and abilities. There is no good in me, but only what God allows me to accomplish. I guess we should celebrate that the grace of God is always enough!

And we know that God works all things together for the good...

Can anything good really come from a snowstorm in late April? The answer is...yes, absolutely.

I have started doing my multi-engine instrument training, and although I tried making my bookings far ahead, it was uncertain how I would be able to get the right bookings (because the flight school was so busy). I needed to start this week in the simulator, and managed only a couple of bookings to start with. Well, wouldn't you know it, a winter storm came along and all but cancelled two days of bookings at the flying school. Suddenly I was able to pick up a couple of extra sessions in the simulator. As a result, I am now ready to get started in the airplane for the actual flight training. I continue to trust that the One who controls the weather will indeed work all things for the good.

God's Timing

We were accepted by Mission Aviation Fellowship as outgoing missionaries in May 2005. So what have we been doing since then? Well, we started gathering a team of prayer and financial supporters. Then, we went through some cross cultural training, had another child, went through a church split, a job change, and alot of confusion. As time went on, we weren't really sure how to proceed. At one point, almost had given up on MAF. As we prayed about it, God was strangely silent...or not so strangely. The fact that God wasn't saying anything new wasn't a bad thing. We realized during this time, that he hadn't changed His mind, and didn't feel like He had to repeat Himself. So we waited, knowing only that we were called to go somewhere, sometime, but not knowing when or where. So we waited...and carried on with "normal life". Kids, work, kids, kids, kids...

This past Feb., we came back from a restful family vacation to Edmonton...and found a very important e-mail waiting for us. We were asked to consider a two year posting with Mission Aviation Fellowship, loaned out to Flying Mission in Botswana (a common practice in mission circles). We prayed, and felt that this was the right opportunity for us. So, we accepted the position, and have been preparing to get over there.

What do we need to do to make the move overseas? Well, we are sharing the need, and have been gathering prayer and financial support already. We have started selling off and giving away un-needed items. We have begun getting vaccinations, and have started to cherish the last moments we have with each of you. We want to make the most of our time left here, realizing that thing will never be the same again. We will miss our falily and friends, but we know that this is what we are called to do. Yet before we go, we hope that our times together will make rich deposits in the lives of each other.
